Class Descriptions

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) & First Aid Certification

This is a standard 5 ½ hour course designed to train lay responders to overcome any reluctance to act in emergency situations and to recognize and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in adults. Provides the lay responder with the knowledge and skills necessary in an emergency to help sustain life and to minimize pain and the consequences of injury or sudden illness until professional medical help arrives.
The student must pass a certification test with an 80% or higher grade to receive a certificate of completion.

 

Client Records Management

This class is designed to provide the student with knowledge, skills and an understanding of the client record and the continuum of care that the record documents and tracks. The class presents screening, assessment and evaluation, ASAM placement criteria, diagnosis, treatment planning, progress note completion, documentation requirements and discharge planning.  These 14 hours of DBH Approved Credit will earn the student a Certificate of Training from American Pathways University Downing Street Learning Center.

 

Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Training

The student may be permitted to pursue Class A or Class B license. The student is evaluated, based on prior class participation, punctuality, curriculum achievement, success and aptitude. Individual motivation will be a requirement during the assessment process to insure the student’s success.
The student will be required to obtain a permit from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) before being allowed to register for the class. Upon entrance to the training, the student  will be required to pass a physical before being allowed to go forward in training.
Upon completion of the training, the student will be expected to pass the CDL written test,  physical, successfully demonstrate pre-trip safety inspection, demonstrate competent driving skills, and pass the driving test by a state certified CDL tester.
Upon successful completion of the training students will have obtained either a CDL-B or CDL-A license.

 

Construction Basics 

The goal of this course is to train future construction professionals in rudimentary construction safety, proper hand tool operation, basic construction math, blueprint reading, estimating and scheduling. All standards shall meet National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) teaching standards.

 

Construction Career Skills

Financial literacy, Healthy relationships, Housing and Identification, and job readiness.
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to describe employment expectations including attendance, punctuality, leave management, and workplace ethics; the trainee will be able to describe workplace behaviors that are likely to increase job success, retention and promotion. The trainee will be able to demonstrate ability to complete an acceptable application, resume and employment interview.
The trainee will pass a DOT drug test, and may have also been previously tested as a requirement for entry into the program at the Matthew Center.

 Ethical Issues in the Alcohol and Drug Clinical Setting

Knowledge of ethics and jurisprudence for the addiction counselor is essential for safe practice. This class will cover the Mental Health Statute that regulates the practice of psychotherapy in Colorado, and introduce the student to the regulatory system and the role of DORA (Department of Regulatory Agencies) and ADAD (Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division) in the development and credentialing of the addiction counselor. There will be an emphasis on developing ethical decision making skills, knowledge of confidentiality and the prohibited activities in the Mental Health Statute. The student will become familiar with the NAADAC Code of Ethics and acquire the tools for ethical practice.  These 14 hours of DBH Approved Credit will earn the student a Certificate of Training from American Pathways University Downing Street Learning Center.

 

Heavy Equipment Training and Certification

Motivated students who show an aptitude for this area will be trained in skills for a very livable wage. The training will give you the skills and knowledge necessary not only to get you the job, but to keep it!
Classes are offered in Backhoe, Bobcat (skidsteer) and All - terrain Forklift operation. The training focus is hands-on operation, equipment care knowledge and safety skills training of heavy equipment operation. Students learn to safely and efficiently operate heavy equipment primarily consisting of practical instruction on full size equipment to gain confidence on the larger sizes, in a variety of soil, slope, terrain, and actual working site conditions. Students will also learn how to use construction-related equipment for land clearing, culverts and ponds, ditches for utilities, pipe laying and road building.
Upon successful completion, a certificate will be issued which conforms to National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) standards.

 

Highway Flagging and Certification

4 hour training class that upon successful completion, the student will obtain a Flagger’s Certification Card. The certification requirements include reviewing the latest edition of the Flagger’s Training Manual, viewing a flagger training video, and obtaining a passing score of at least 80 percent on a Flagger Proficiency Test. The motivated student must be of average intelligence, be of good physical condition, including sight and hearing, be mentally alert, have a courteous but firm manner, be neat in appearance, and have a sense of responsibility for the safety of the public and work crew. The student must be capable of hearing and speaking enough English to understand instructions and communicate with the traveling public and others at the work site.

 

Infectious Diseases

Drug and alcohol abuse and infectious diseases go hand in hand. Anyone who is abusing drugs is at high risk for contracting and spreading infectious diseases. Understanding of diseases that might affect clients who are addicted to alcohol and other substances is a cornerstone of addiction counseling. This class will help prepare addiction professionals to identify such diseases, determine client risk for infection, and educate clients about disease prevention and treatment options and to assist clients in obtaining appropriate treatment as needed.  These 14 hours of DBH Approved Credit will earn the student a Certificate of Training from American Pathways University Downing Street Learning Center.

 

Introduction to the Field Technician

An 8 hour class to augment the current Construction Curriculum and as a follow on class for the "Roadway Construction Basics". This class will provide the student with an even deeper understanding of the road construction Industry and specifically focus on the skills required for employment in the Engineering or Inspection Industries. This class will provide those who seek certification in the future, as an Inspector or Technician a leg up in the process. This class will be offered on a stand­ alone basis to previous students who have shown an aptitude and desire to pursue this field of study and as an optional class to students beginning their construction basics training.

 

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Certification

A 10 hour training class that will provide construction workers, supervisors, and other personnel responsible for construction activities with an awareness of construction safety and health concerns in the construction industry. Upon successful course completion, the student will receive a Department of Labor OSHA construction safety and health 10-hour course certification and completion card.

 

Roadway Construction Basics

A 4 hour class to augment the current Construction Curriculum. This class will provide the student with a deeper understanding of the road construction Industry and better prepare the student for a career into one of the fields of road construction. This module will fill a void in the Construction Basics curriculum by providing a "road construction" focus for the student and provide CDOT and CDOT’s contractors with a student better qualified for their OJT programs. This class will be offered on a stand-alone basis to previous students and as an additional class to a student beginning construction basics training.
  

Warehouse Forklift Training and Certification

Provide the student with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely operate a wharehouse forklift.  Basic maintenance, operation and safety procedures are covered.  Hands on operation of the wharehouse forklift.  Students will be required to drive and operate the wharehouse forklift through an obstacle course and perform various lifting and placement exercises.  This is a 5 hour course. Upon successful completion, the student will receive a Department of Labor (DOL)Forklift Operator's Certification Card.
